Colleagues and scholars from coast to coast, across Bass Strait and all the ships at sea.
Dateline: Australia, State Politics, March 2015.
For the third time in five months we've had a state election.
In Victoria and Queensland we saw a change of government and in New South Wales we saw the return of the incumbent government.
All this occurred with a minimum of fuss.
The people have expressed their will; their views have been respected; the outcomes have been honoured.
This has not been a common experience in human history; indeed, it is very much the exception.
This is something of which we should be very proud; something we should cherish deeply; and something we should protect fiercely - so that "government of the people, by the people, for the people, shall not perish from the Earth."
