Fellow citizens,
Today, April 4, marks 49 years since the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King Jr was assassinated in Memphis, Tennessee.
He was just 39 years old.
Martin Luther King wrote and spoke so many beautiful and powerful words.
These words inscribed below had an incredible impact on me when I first read them and, I believe, sum up the man perfectly. They left as indelible a mark on my conscience as they have on this wall. The years since have only served to reinforce their power.
Martin Luther King gave a final extraordinary speech (the evening before he was assassinated) in which he effectively foretold of his impending death.
You can view an excerpt of that speech on YouTube here
For the interest of colleagues and scholars from coast to coast, across Bass Strait and all the ships at sea.
